Money Market Mutual Funds in India
Updated June 2026 · 57 active funds · data from AMFI NAVs
Money Market funds invest only in money-market instruments - treasury bills, commercial paper, certificates of deposit and similar - with a maximum maturity of one year, per SEBI's definition. They sit close to Liquid and Ultra Short funds but are distinguished by instrument type rather than a narrow duration band: the focus is on high-quality, short-tenor money-market paper. This gives low interest-rate risk and generally modest credit risk, with yields a little above Liquid funds in many environments. The typical role is short-term cash management with a horizon of several months to about a year - holding surplus money, building a conservative buffer, or earning a steady carry on idle balances. Returns are stable and NAV movement is usually small, though not guaranteed. The default benchmark on FindMF is the NIFTY Money Market Index. We compute trailing returns and risk metrics for all 57 Money Market funds from AMFI-published daily NAVs using a disclosed methodology, so you can compare yield and stability across the category on consistent terms.
Who it suits: Investors with a several-month-to-one-year horizon wanting steady carry from high-quality short-term money-market paper.

Frequently asked questions
How are Money Market funds taxed?
As debt funds: for units bought on or after 1 April 2023, the entire gain is taxed at your income-tax slab rate regardless of holding period, with no indexation. Confirm with a tax professional.
How does a Money Market fund differ from a Liquid fund?
Liquid funds cap residual maturity at 91 days across money-market instruments; Money Market funds can hold paper up to one year. That can mean slightly higher yield but a touch more sensitivity. Compare realised returns and volatility on FindMF from AMFI NAVs.
What is a reasonable expense ratio, and how do I compare funds?
Direct-plan ratios are typically low (often around 0.15-0.40%). With similar holdings across funds, cost is a major differentiator. Compare expense ratio alongside net trailing returns and volatility on FindMF, all from AMFI NAVs.
Can a Money Market fund lose value?
It is low-risk but not guaranteed - a credit downgrade or a rise in short-term rates can dent NAV briefly. FindMF's volatility and drawdown figures, from AMFI NAVs, show how stable each fund has been.
