Short Duration Mutual Funds in India
Updated June 2026 · 61 active funds · data from AMFI NAVs
Short Duration funds maintain a portfolio Macaulay duration of 1 to 3 years, per SEBI. They hold a blend of corporate bonds, government securities and money-market instruments tuned to that band, accepting moderate interest-rate risk for higher yield potential than ultra-short categories. Because duration is the only constraint, credit quality varies by fund, so the actual risk depends on the manager's strategy. The typical role is for a two-to-three-year horizon: medium-term goals, a core debt allocation that earns more than liquid options without taking on long-duration volatility, or a steadier counterweight to equity. Returns are generally higher than Low Duration funds but the NAV moves more when interest rates shift, and a credit event in a holding can cause a sharper dip. The default benchmark on FindMF is the NIFTY Short Duration Debt Index. We compute trailing returns and risk metrics for all 61 Short Duration funds from AMFI-published daily NAVs using a disclosed methodology, so you can judge return against realised volatility and drawdown rather than headline yield.
Who it suits: Investors with a two-to-three-year horizon wanting a core debt holding with moderate rate risk and higher yield than ultra-short funds.

Frequently asked questions
How are Short Duration funds taxed?
As debt funds. For units purchased on or after 1 April 2023, the whole capital gain is taxed at your slab rate regardless of holding period, with no indexation or separate long-term rate. Verify with a tax adviser.
How sensitive are these funds to interest rates?
Moderately. With a 1-3 year duration, a 1% rise in rates roughly reduces NAV by 1-3% before accrual, all else equal. That is more than ultra-short funds but far less than long-duration funds. FindMF shows realised volatility and drawdown from AMFI NAVs.
What expense ratio is reasonable, and how should I compare funds?
Direct-plan ratios commonly run around 0.30-0.70%. Since funds differ in credit quality and duration positioning, compare expense ratio together with net trailing returns and volatility on FindMF, all computed from AMFI NAVs.
Do Short Duration funds carry credit risk?
They can - the category caps duration, not credit quality, so some funds hold lower-rated bonds for extra yield. Review portfolio credit ratings. FindMF's drawdown figures help reveal funds that took sharper hits.
