Liquid Mutual Funds in India
Updated June 2026 · 130 active funds · data from AMFI NAVs
Liquid funds invest in money-market instruments - treasury bills, commercial paper, certificates of deposit and similar - with a residual maturity of up to 91 days, as defined by SEBI. The short maturity keeps interest-rate risk low and credit risk modest (though not zero), while delivering yields typically a little above Overnight funds and savings accounts. They are the workhorse of short-term cash management in India: used to park surplus money for weeks to a few months, hold an emergency fund, or stage lump sums before deploying into equity via an STP. SEBI also mandates a graded exit load for the first six days to discourage ultra-short churn. Returns are steady and capital fluctuation is usually small, but a liquid fund is not a bank deposit - NAVs can dip if a holding is downgraded. The default benchmark on FindMF is the NIFTY Liquid Index. We compute trailing returns and risk metrics for all 130 Liquid funds from AMFI-published daily NAVs using a disclosed methodology, letting you compare yield and stability objectively rather than on advertised rates.
Who it suits: Savers parking surplus cash or an emergency fund for a few weeks to a few months who want better-than-savings yield with high liquidity.

Frequently asked questions
How are Liquid funds taxed?
As debt funds. For units purchased on or after 1 April 2023, the whole capital gain is taxed at your income-tax slab rate irrespective of holding period, with no indexation or separate long-term rate. Verify with a tax professional.
How fast can I get my money out of a Liquid fund?
Redemptions usually settle on the next business day (T+1), and many funds offer instant redemption up to a regulatory cap. Note SEBI's graded exit load for redemptions within the first six days, which tapers to nil from day seven.
What expense ratio is reasonable, and how do I compare Liquid funds?
Direct-plan expense ratios are typically low (often around 0.10-0.30%). Since funds hold similar instruments, small cost and credit-quality differences drive returns. Compare net trailing returns, expense ratio and realised volatility on FindMF - all from AMFI NAVs.
Are Liquid funds completely safe?
They are low-risk but not risk-free. A credit event in a held instrument can dent NAV, and a six-day exit load applies to very short holdings. FindMF's volatility and drawdown figures, computed from AMFI NAVs, show how stable each fund has actually been.
